Dilige et quod vis fac

The best feeling in the world

THE COMMANDMENT

Love and do what you want, or what freedom is

It seems that one day St. Augustine, when pressed by a “journalist” who asked him to summarize all of Christ’s teachings in a single sentence, responded with this very sentence. Dilige et quod vis fac. Love and do what you want.
We made it our motto because it perfectly summarizes the why and wherefore of everything we do. Give us a few minutes to explain, and you will get the very definition of Freedom in return.

Do what you want

For real

“Do what you want,” in many variations, we have often heard it said, but always with a negative connotation. “Do what you want” when we give up on convincing a stubborn person. “Mind your own business” when we want to push away a busybody. “Do whatever he wants” when we point out a capricious person. “I do what I want” when we want to impose our independence.

Yet, if we had to define a person as free to the highest degree, we would probably say that he is someone who “does whatever he wants.”

So let's ask ourselves, what did Augustine mean? If everyone really did what they wanted, what kind of world would it be? And what do our Homo Faber, the ethics of Plinio il Giovane and the choice to make everything by hand with ancient techniques, with all this?

We dismantle and reassemble

A MANO

We don't want to keep you in suspense, so here's the solution. To find it, we did something very simple: we read it backwards. Instead of "do what you want," try reading it like this: "what you want, do it" in the sense of "build it," "create it," "produce it"...

Change everything!

Imagine you want a slice of cake. Now it’s no longer a question of demanding it, buying it, or taking it. You want a slice of cake? Make it! Open it, blend it, beat it, mix it, incorporate it, add it, bake it, wait, cut it, serve it… only then can you eat it. Now we’re starting to understand each other, right? Apply this way of thinking to everything. To every ingredient, every object, every result, everything we’ve ever wanted and will ever want.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Maximum freedom = maximum responsibility

WHAT A DISCOVERY

If we wanted, we could stop here.

We want a cleaner world. This is why we “produce” using only 100% natural materials. We want our customers to love us, this is why we “create” elegant, light and functional furniture. We want our impact on the environment to be minimal, this is why we “make” furniture that lasts for generations, that is not affected by fashion and that becomes more and more beautiful over time.

And we want every action of ours to be a source of wealth, not consumption. This is why we do everything by hand and with ancient techniques. Not only because they guarantee us beautiful and super resistant products. But above all because our mission is to ensure that the craft and knowledge of our Homo Faber is passed down to their children, students, men and women, not to machines or computers.

But why?

Because we want a world made of women and men who “make” the world instead of consuming it

The best feeling in the world

BE FREE

Why would you ever prefer the high costs and thousand difficulties of producing everything by hand, piece by piece, with methods from a hundred years ago?

We could get the same results (at least apparently) using poorer materials (making more money), harmful chemicals (drying faster), numerically controlled machines (we would have more competitive prices). In short, we could only think about profit and appearances. But…

We would deprive ourselves and our Homo Fabers of the most beautiful feeling in the world. That feeling of freedom and great satisfaction that only we humans can feel every time we find ourselves, proud, in front of the product of our actions.

HOW

CON AMORE

Now, imagine topping all this work, this effort and this passion with the love for your profession and your mission. Imagine doing what you want because you love doing it. And also imagine standing in front of your creation, in front of your client, in front of the world you have helped to make, with a beautiful smile of satisfaction that lights up your face. There, you have just imagined Pliny the Younger
